ENA Statement on Current Public Health Matters
January 29, 2025 • Emergency Nurses Association Position Statement Public Health
On Wednesday, ENA issued the following statement relating to ongoing developments impacting public health.
It all comes back to patient care.
For 54 years, ENA has delivered and supported the use of the evidence-based resources emergency nurses need to provide the highest quality care possible to every patient.
And, without exception, ENA believes every person is entitled to equitable access to affordable, comprehensive, quality health care.
ENA continues to closely monitor ongoing developments impacting public health related to, among other issues:
- Current restrictions placed on the release of information from key public health agencies.
- Federal funding cuts at academic institutions that support biomedical research initiatives, as well as the growth and development of nursing programs.
- New policies and proposed legislation which would erode already tenuous health equity standards.
- Challenges to requirements for vaccines proven to protect people from severe and prolonged illnesses.
- Changes to international partnerships which disrupt effective data sharing and coordinated strategies used to inform responses to emerging global health threats.
ENA’s attention to these and other emerging topics is rooted in several foundational position statements and the current Public Policy Agenda adopted by the association. Links to key statements and the Public Policy Agenda can be found below.
While deeply concerned about any measures that reduce patient access to care, ENA opposes any actions which degrade the quality of clinical data or information which emergency nurses, or any other health care providers, rely upon to deliver the best possible care to their patients.
Emergency departments represent the front line of health care. They are a safety net in many communities. With an unrelenting commitment to helping others, emergency care teams must continue to support as they stand ready to be there for people in their most vulnerable moments.
