Swapna Peter to focus on compassionate care, compassion fatigue among ED nurses

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (Aug. 22, 2024) – Throughout her 25-year nursing career – 10 of those in the emergency department – Swapna Peter of California has been driven by a profound commitment to advance emergency nursing practice and improve patient outcomes.

This is what led her to be selected as the ENA Foundation’s 2024 Emergency Nursing Diverse Voices Research Fellowship recipient and receive a grant that allows her to conduct research on the measurement of compassionate care provided by emergency nurses while exploring interventions to address compassion fatigue.

“Increasing diversity, equity and inclusivity is a core value of ENA and I’m proud that the ENA Foundation is contributing to that with the ENDVR program,” said ENA Foundation Chairperson Amy Boren, MS, RN, CEN, CPEN, TCRN. “Swapna is passionate about emergency nursing and improving patient outcomes, which is exactly what an ENDVR Fellow should possess.”

Peter will be attending Emergency Nursing 2024 in Las Vegas to participate in research activities. She also has the opportunity to partner with two members of the Emergency Nursing Research Advisory Council who will serve as mentors; develop a research project to be conducted locally; attend advisory council meetings; and present her results and findings at Emergency Nursing 2025. The fellowship may extend to two years as needed.

In 2022, the ENA Foundation, Emergency Nursing Research Advisory Council and ENA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity Committee partnered together to launch the ENDVR Fellowship program aimed at increasing diversity in nursing research, while also providing support and mentoring to emerging researchers who are members of underrepresented groups.

“It’s important to have diverse perspectives in research to ensure that all voices, of nurses and patients, are represented and heard,” said ENA President Chris Dellinger, MBA, BSN, RN, FAEN. “All of our Fellows bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences to their research allowing them to recognize possible gaps in emergency care which they can use this grant to research and improve.”
