ENA-supported Programs Included in House-passed Funding Legislation

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (July 29, 2021) On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed the FY 2022 Labor, Health & Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill which includes important funding priorities supported by the Emergency Nurses Association.

Funding increases to ENA-priority programs include:

• Emergency Medical Services for Children – a program dedicated to reducing childhood morbidity and mortality resulting from severe illness or trauma. $6 million increase.
• MISSION ZERO – a program that improves trauma care by providing grants to integrate military trauma care providers into civilian trauma centers. $5 million in first-time funding.
• Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs – Provides scholarships and loans for nursing students and funds nursing education institutions. $50 million increase.
• National Institute for Nursing Research – part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the NINH supports research to establish a scientific basis for nursing care. $25 million increase.
• Poison Control Centers – a network of 55 centers nationwide, including the toll-free hotline- that offers medical support 24 hours per day, seven days per week. $2 million increase.
• Firearm Injury and Mortality Research – CDC and NIH research seeking to prevent firearm violence and the trauma, injuries and mortality resulting from firearm violence. $25 million increase.

ENA applauds the House of Representatives for taking this important first step in providing the necessary funding to enhance emergency care and support the education of nurses. ENA urges the Senate to support these vital programs when it considers this legislation.
