Why do you seek a position on the Leadership Development and Elections Committee?

The Leadership Development and Elections Committee is charged with helping to develop the future leaders of our organization. As a member who took advantage of the ENA Board Mentor program many years ago it gave me great insights into the workings of the ENA Board. This sparked an interest in me to further my own personal advancement within ENA.

For ENA to continue to be the premier organization representing emergency nurses we must have strong leadership to sit on the Board of Directors and guide our association. I personally have seen what happens when we have people voted onto our Board who do not have the “true” qualifications for the level of service they will be providing.

Leading at the Chapter and State level is a totally different experience than what the role is sitting on the Board of Directors. I believe we have a lot of members who could make great Board members with the right mentoring to help guide them with the transition from their day-to-day jobs and/or local level positions into the role as a Board member.

How does your academic, professional background and experience within ENA make you a qualified Leadership Development and Elections Committee Candidate?

My journey within ENA has allowed me to be a chapter and state leader within Kansas and Texas. I have severed on several ENA committees, served on the ENA Board of Directors in the role as a Director, Secretary/Treasurer, President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past President. I have also had the privilege to serve on the ENA Foundation Board of Trustees, where I am currently serving as the Immediate Past Chair.

My professional career has also allowed me to be a leader both formally and informally serving in a variety of roles in a variety of healthcare settings from large Level I Trauma Centers, Community Hospitals, and free-standing emergency departments. Each institution brings its own challenges in being a leader and allows opportunity for personal growth in my own journey as a leader.

Outline the specific skills you bring, or contributions you hope to make to the ENA Leadership Development and Elections Committee.

I believe my personal experience serving on both the ENA Board and the ENA Foundation gives me a great perspective on what is needed to be successful serving on a board. I would hope I can translate my experience to fellow members of the Leadership Development and Elections Committee who have not had the opportunity to serve in these positions so they understand how critical the board competencies are and for us to be able then to strategize on how we can help create educational materials and offer guidance to ENA members who strive to serve on the Board or in other leadership positions.

As far as particular skills are concerned, I would say my ability to listen to understand, communicate, positivity, integrity, and relationship building would be some of the top skills I would bring to the table.

Provide a narrative that exemplifies how you demonstrate the Leadership Development and Elections Committee Competencies.

When reviewing the competencies I believe my experience serving on the ENA Board of Directors and specially in the role of the President exemplifies my understanding and abilities to meet each one of them. Looking at the first competency of Knowledge, my professional experience working in a variety of care settings also gives me a unique perspective in understanding the difference of our members in their unique care setting.

The second competency of Decision Making. When deciding I like to get the information, understand the information, have group dialogue ensuring all members of the team have a chance to have their viewpoints expressed before we make an informed decision.

The third competency of Communication is one as a leader I will always strive to do better. Using different modes of communication and trying to ensure the message is really getting across. With that said though, I have no issues expressing myself.

The fourth competency is Leadership Development. My work to help guide our members and support them in their leadership journey has been successful as there are two sitting members on the Board, I helped grow in their leadership skills so they could be successful running for the Board.
