Accurate triage is at an alarmingly low rate of 60 percent or below based on current studies. This statistic must improve for the sake of patients.

The Emergency Nurses Association recognizes that rapid and accurate triage decisions are important for successful emergency department operations and optimal patient outcomes. To ensure every ED patient gets the right care at the right time, ENA is focused on supporting and guiding emergency nurses as they overcome the challenges they face with triage.

From the Emergency Severity Index®, Triage Curriculum, to partners in research including Mednition, ENA provides a continuum of triage education and resources for nurses of all experience levels.

“It cannot be overstated, strong triage education and training absolutely helps save lives in the emergency department.” - ENA President Terry Foster, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN, CCRN, TCRN, FAEN

Let’s improve triage accuracy, together.

    Testimonials from Learners:

    • "The Triage Workshop helped me as a new ED nurse to obtain clarification from observed common practices and intended algorithms. Knowing the value behind how and why we triage using the ESI helps me see the bigger picture and the potential trajectory of my patients. This course should be a requirement before any new nurse is thrown out into the front as T1." - Kevin P.
    • "Love the class. Loved the actual triage situations so you can practice right away lessons learned. As an experienced triage nurse, I loved the reminders to do our best for each patient, overcome your bias, and stop at ESI 1 and then move down."
    • "I have had to take a lot of courses like this as a new grad RN and this is the first one that I didn't feel bored and did not feel bored and did not feel like I was wasting time. I actually learned a lot."
    • "Hearing the justifications for the ESI levels... there will definitely be a change for me and how I triage and assign ESI's/This was a very informative and eye-opening course."

    Testimonials from ED Leaders:

    • "The pre-course modules and Triage Workshop were very effective in introducing triage and ESI Levels to the new nurses or nurses who are preparing to transition to Triage role in the Emergency Department. The course materials provided excellent theoretical support while the in-person Triage Workshop allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the materials and meaningful discussion on clinical application." - Jhoanna G.
    • "The Triage Workshop gave staff a better understanding of the different nuances of triage and how they can make a better clinical decision about the acuity for their patients." - Jennifer M.
    • "Many of the nurses who participated felt that this reinforced their ESI knowledge/ They also felt that it was a great reminder that there are often patients that should be an ESI 1 that they were making an ESI 2/ Application of the knowledge was a great help for the staff who attend." - Ann K.

    ENA Triage Curriculum

"Due to the myriad of challenges facing emergency departments, emergency nurses are being asked to function in a triage role sooner than ever before. Having a strong curriculum that is complete and focuses on more than just a triage algorithm is essential. The ENA Triage Curriculum covers a wide breadth of topics ranging from special patient populations to health care law. It also goes in-depth about patient communication, symptom presentation and triage assessment, disaster and mass casualty, and prioritizing. These courses offer an excellent foundation for new emergency nurses learning triage, experienced nurses hoping to refresh and validate their knowledge, and emergency departments hoping to standardize their staff’s triage education. I am thrilled that ENA is now offering this essential and evidence-based Triage Curriculum." - ENA University Provost Patti Kunz Howard, PhD, RN, CEN, CPEN, NE-BC, TCRN, FAEN, FAAN

    Emergency Severity Index Education

The ESI® algorithm used by approximately 94 percent of U.S. hospitals, provides nurses the tools needed to properly assess patients to optimize patient flow, ensure timely and appropriate care and improve patient outcomes. To support proper training and education of how to utilize the ESI algorithm, ENA offers a handbook and online course that have just been revised to include updated content and research that support Emergency Severity Index level criteria and clarify language that could lead to misinterpretations.

ESI Handbook, 5th Edition - new!

This handbook assists emergency nurses with implementation of the Emergency Severity Index. The current handbook has been reorganized and simplified to better explain each decision point within the algorithm. While the algorithm is fundamentally unchanged, there is clarifying wording to support ED nurses in their acuity decision making.

The handbook does not provide comprehensive triage training. It is best used in conjunction with comprehensive triage education such as ESI 2.0 Course and Triage Curriculum.
