| Some Changes at ENA
|
| ENA welcomes James Richmann, RN, BS, CEN, MA(c), to a one-year term on the Board of Directors. Jim is coordinator of Patient Care Services at Underwood Memorial Hospital. He replaces Polly Gerber Zimmerman, RN, MS, MBS, CEN, who resigned her Board position in December.
Gail Pisarcik Lenehan, RN, EdD, FAAN, has resigned her post as Editor of the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Interim co-editors are Anne Marie Lewis, RN, BSN, BA,MA, CEN, and Linda J. Scheetz, EdD, APRN, BC
Judith Halpern, RN, MS, CEN, will be stepping down from the DMR editor position in the next few months to focus on the completion of her doctorate.
Stuart Meyer will join the ENA staff as Marketing & Membership Officer. He has been at the American Bar Association since 2000, in various roles—each a promotion. He began as Director of Marketing and Member Services and is leaving as Director, Section of Labor and Employment Law. Stuart's career began in politics in the state of Kentucky. Additional management experience offered him opportunity to generate revenue and take responsibility for multiple areas, similar to what he will encounter at ENA. |

| Candidate Deadline for Nominations Committee Election Extended
|
| The call for candidates from the Central States to serve on the Nominations Committee has been extended until January 10. Interested members must send a letter of intent with contact information (name, address, phone, fax, e-mail) stating interest in running for a committee position to Patti Howard at gburns@ena.org.. Members living in Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin are urged to consider serving on this committee. | State Leaders Turn Out for Orientation
|
| Almost 100 new and veteran state leaders took advantage of the State Council Orientation last month in Chicago. This year, in addition to presidents and presidents-elect, secretary/treasurers were invited to attend the workshops and roundtable sessions. Despite an old-fashioned Midwest snowstorm, all councils except Guam, Delaware, Ohio, Missouri, and Wyoming sent representatives. |

Proehl Serves as Expert Panelist for NCSBN

| Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) announces that Jean A. Proehl, RN, MN, CEN, CCRN, FAEN has served as an expert panelist for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s (NCSBN™) practice analysis meeting. The meeting’s purpose was to develop a list of nursing activity statements that post entry-level RN, perform throughout their careers. NCSBN plans to survey RNs in 2006 in order to describe the continuing practice of RNs and to address NCSBN’s strategic initiative, measuring the continuing competence of nurses. The survey initiative is anticipated to begin January 2006. All nurses receiving the survey are strongly encouraged to complete and return it. |

Save the Date at Leadership Challenge 2006 in Austin, Texas-Saturday, February 25, 6 - 8:00 p.m. Join ENA Foundation for a private showing of Esther's Follies, touted as a new vaudeville. Since 1977, it has been performing topical satire, magic and musical-comedy parodies and fun, set against the backdrop of Austin's hysterical, historical entertainment district 6 Street. Pre-registration and fee of $55 are required, and seating is limited. Beverages only will be available. |

| Call for Poster Abstracts for Scientific Assembly 2006-January 15 Deadline

| ENA invites you to submit abstracts for research posters and papers, clinical posters, and injury prevention posters for the 2006 Scientific Assembly, September 14-16 in San Antonio, Texas. The deadline for the e-mail submission is January 15, 2006. Abstracts of completed clinical projects, or projects in the final stages of evaluation with preliminary results available, may be submitted. Suggested clinical topics include, but are not limited to, abstracts which address implementation and evaluation of a new program, computer programs, shared governance, orientation programs, triage, and customer satisfaction. Abstracts must be prepared according to the guidelines that are available for download on the ENA Web site at www.ena.org or by contacting the ENA Research Department at 800/900-9659 ext. 4119, or by e-mail at abstracts@ena.org. |

| Call for Candidates-Distinguished CFRN® Award

The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) and the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA) would like to recognize a CFRN who has demonstrated support for certification in flight nursing. The Distinguished CFRN Award recognizes a CFRN who has promoted the certification process in flight nursing. The candidate represents the certification credential either to colleagues, other disciplines, or consumers. The award will be presented at the 2006 Critical Care Transport Medical Conference (CCTMC) in Las Vegas, Nevada April 3 - 5, 2006. The recipient will have airfare, one night hotel and meeting registration paid by ASTNA.

The Luminary Project Nurses Lighting the Way to Environmental Health

| The Luminary Project is a collaborative environmental health initiative that recognizes and highlights nurses who are concerned about environmental health issues. This is a web-based collection and sharing of illuminating stories of nurses who protect people’s health by improving the health of the environment. | Health Care Without Harm Mini-Grant Program: 2005-2006

Health Care Without Harm announces its Nurses Workgroup Mini-Grant Program with awards ranging from $500 to $3,000. The program is designed to support innovative efforts to expand and deepen the involvement of nurses in environmental health issues, to promote advocacy activities, and to encourage those initiatives that showcase collaborative efforts between nurses and environmental organizations. Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care

| The National Consensus Project (NCP) recently released their Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, which describes the core elements of an evidence-based model palliative care program. Widespread adoption of the Guidelines will help establish palliative care as an integral component of care for persons with life-threatening or debilitating illnesses. A number of prominent health care organizations, including ENA, have endorsed the Guidelines. | National Nurses Survey on Health and Chemical Exposures

| ENA members are invited to complete the National Nurses Survey on Health and Chemical Exposures. The online survey, which can be found at www.ewg.org/sites/nurse_survey/, explores the relationship between a nurse’s health and on-the-job exposures to chemicals, drugs, and other harmful agents. Nurses are able to enter information online about their workplace experiences and exposures, as well as download information related to hazardous substances and alternative products.
