INJURY PREVENTION INSTITUTE

Suicide Prevention Resources

“Is Your Patient Suicidal?” One in 10 suicides is by a person seen in an ED within two months of dying. Many of these people were never assessed for suicide risk. By asking the right questions and making appropriate referrals, you can save lives. ENA and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center developed a poster, designed for staff areas in the emergency department, and an accompanying resource guide to help you make these assessments. The poster and guide provide busy practitioners with signs of acute suicide risk, questions to ask and how to ask them and guidance on evaluation and rapid triage for patients who may be at low, moderate or high risk. Evidence shows that 10 percent of all ED patients are thinking of suicide, but most don’t tell.

The full color poster and guide were created with the participation of ENA, the American Association of Suicidology, American Association for Emergency Psychiatry, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
