Share the Benefits - Be a Champion
Based on this overwhelming evidence, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the
American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Emergency Nurses Association sponsored a
one-day conference in 2000, to develop a series of best practices in emergency care for alcohol impaired
patients. 29 Recommended best practices for nurses included:
- Identifying alcohol-related events in initial patient assessment using appropriate history, physical exam, and screening tools;
- Documenting objective findings of assessment, interventions, and patient care plan;
- Communicating and collaborating with healthcare team to implement care plan;
- Providing care in a professional and non-judgmental manner;
- Advocating in the community for programs and policy for alcohol use problems;
- Participating in research to improve care; and
- Integrating alcohol screening and education into curricula, continuing education, and standards for emergency professionals.
