IOM Releases Reports on the Future of Emergency Care
On Wednesday, June 14, 2006, The Institute of Medicine (IOM) conducted a press briefing to annouce the release of several reports that assess the future of emergency care in the U.S. health system. The reports focus on pre-hospital, hospital-based, and pediatric/trauma care and include an integrated overview of the emergency care system in the United States.
ENA actively participated in the development of these reports by providing staffing guidelines, position statements and 2001/2005 national benchmark guide data to the IOM. This included information of emergency care supply and utilization, patient safety, ED patient flow and crowding, information technology in emergency care, and workforce education and training. Because of ENA’s participation in this project, it has an important and unique opportunity to highlight its data points and emergency nursing expertise to the media around one of the most important announcements in healthcare this year.
