Module One: Shock States (120 Minutes)
Wednesday, June 11, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Shock Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Hypovolemic shock
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Distributive shock
  • Obstructive shock

Content will focus on the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care for various shock patients with various emergent or urgent conditions. Also included is an in-depth review of both cardiovascular physiology, as well as cardiovascular pharmacology, which will lay down the foundation for material to be covered in future sessions.


Module Two: Patient Care Management and Professional Issues/Genitourinary Emergencies (120 Minutes)
Wednesday, July 2, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Patient Care Management and Professional Issues—Topics include:

  • Prioritization of care
  • Pediatric considerations
  • Legal issues
  • Pain assessment and management
  • Drug calculations
  • Forensics
  • Stabilization and transport
  • Disaster management
  • Critical incident stress management and ethical decision-making

Genitourinary Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Acute renal failure
  • Genitourinary infections and trauma
  • Genitourinary problems specific to males
  • Genitourinary problems specific to females


Module Three: Obstetrical and Gynecological Emergencies/Abdominal Emergencies (120 Minutes)
Wednesday, July 9, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Abdominal Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Abdominal assessments
  • Medical, surgical, and traumatic injuries of the abdomen
  • Abdominal injuries specific to males
  • Abdominal injuries specific to females

Gynecological and Obstetrical Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Bleeding in both early and late pregnancy
  • Assessment of the pregnant patient
  • Complications encountered in the pregnant patient
  • Precipitous delivery and post-delivery care


Module Four: Neurological Emergencies (120 Minutes)
Wednesday, July 16, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Neurological Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Performing a neurological exam
  • Increased intracranial pressure
  • Neurological trauma
  • Headaches
  • Seizures
  • Cerebrovascular accident
  • Peripheral nervous disorders
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Autonomic dysreflexia


Module Five: Environmental and Toxicological Emergencies (120 Minutes)
Wednesday, July 23, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Environmental Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Heat- and cold-related injuries
  • Animal related injuries
  • Diving injuries
  • Thermal and electrical burns

Toxicological Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Assessment and care of patients with a variety of toxicological emergencies
  • Assessment and care of patients with substance abuse disorders


Module Six: Cardiovascular Emergencies (120 minutes)
Wednesday, August 6, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Cardiovascular Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Assessment of the cardiovascular system
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Infections of the cardiovascular system
  • Aortic disorders
  • Peripheral vascular disorders
  • Cardiovascular trauma


Module Seven: Maxillofacial Emergencies/Orthopedic Emergencies (120 minutes)
Wednesday, August 13, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Maxillofacial Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Ocular emergencies
  • Nasal emergencies
  • Emergencies involving the ear, mouth, and throat
  • Cranial nerve disorders
  • Maxillofacial trauma

Orthopedic Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Wounds
  • Fractures
  • Orthopedic trauma
  • Orthopedic complications
  • Amputations


Module Eight: Medical Emergencies/Mental Health Emergencies (120 minutes)
Wednesday, August 20, 2008; 2:00 p.m. Central, 3:00 p.m. Eastern, 1:00 p.m. Mountain, noon Pacific

Medical Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Infectious diseases
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Hematological disorders

Mental Health Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Eating disorders
  • Panic disorder
  • Affective disorders and suicide
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Abuse


Module Nine: Respiratory Emergencies (120 minutes)

Respiratory Emergencies—Topics include:

  • Pulmonary embolus
  • Pulmonary infections
  • Airway emergencies
  • COPD
  • Pulmonary trauma
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Arterial blood gas interpretation
