Benefits of Certification for the Employer
- Reputation - For years, emergency departments and flight nursing crews have been marketing that they employ certified emergency physicians; it is a very strong statement to the public when an emergency department or flight crew can state that they have both certified emergency physicians and nurses.
- Accountability - Some insurance carriers offer financial incentives to hospitals that employ a certain number of certified nurses, especially in the areas of high risk i.e., emergency departments and flight crews.
- Achievement - In a recent survey, nurses who were certified were found to be generally high achievers, had a higher self-esteem, and sought opportunities for professional growth. These are nurses that want to know the latest information in health care and take pride in the care they deliver. This is a valuable asset for the institution in which they are employed.
- Assurance - The Pew Commission, on behalf of the general public, has asked that nurses be required to validate competency. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing is working on guidelines to require a nurse to demonstrate competency. This group is considering certification as a possibility for meeting competency criteria.
