  • What does CEN-RO by IBT stand for?
    CEN Renewal Option by Internet Based Testing.

  • Who is responsible for the CEN-RO by IBT examination and credential?
    The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), a non-profit organization, was established in the early 1980’s to develop and administer the certification for emergency nurses (CEN). BCEN also manages the certification for flight registered nurses (CFRN), and the certification for critical care ground transport registered nurses (CTRN). BCEN maintains the highest standards for certification.

  • Who is eligible to sit for the CEN-RO by IBT?
    To qualify for CEN-RO by IBT, the applicant must be a current CEN with a current unrestricted license or a nursing certificate that is equivalent to a Registered Nurse in the United States or its territories is also acceptable.

  • I do not work in the clinical setting anymore; can I still renew via CEN-RO by IBT?
    Yes, as long as you have a current CEN status and a current unrestricted license or a nursing certificate that is equivalent to a Registered Nurse in the United States or its territories.

  • Is a BSN degree required to complete the CEN-RO by IBT?
    No. You are not required to have a BSN in order to be eligible to sit for the CEN-RO by IBT.

  • Can I renew my CEN via CEN-RO by IBT even though I renewed by CE’s last time?
    Yes, the policy changed in 2002 and you may recertify by your choice of renewal options provided your CEN remains current.

  • How do I register for CEN-RO by IBT?
    To apply for renewal via CEN-RO by IBT click RENEW CERTIFICATION to display the CEN-RO by IBT Online Registration Form.

  • What is the fee structure for CEN-RO by IBT?
    The fee structure varies depending on membership status.

  • Do I need to be a member of ENA to complete CEN-RO by IBT?
    No. Although members receive a discounted fee structure, membership in ENA is not required.

  • Can I join ENA at the time of signing up for CEN-RO by IBT?
    Yes, you may join ENA on the CEN-RO by IBT application form.

  • Can I submit payment via check?
    Yes, however you will need to print the online registration form and mail it to the BCEN office with your payment.

  • Will BCEN accept payment via a check by phone?
    No. Checks by phone are not acceptable.

  • What content areas are covered in the CEN-RO by IBT exam?
    CEN-RO by IBT follows the same content list as the CEN exam.

  • Is the exam hard?
    There is a level of difficulty which is assessed throughout the entire exam. Studying is recommended prior to taking the exam. Create a study plan.

  • What is the passing score?
    The current passing score is approximately 77%.

  • What is the percentage of passing participants?
    The percentage of passing participants is in the 80 percentile.

  • Will I receive my score immediately upon completion of the exam?
    Yes, your score report will be sent to your registered email address upon completion of the exam.

  • When should I submit my registration for CEN-RO by IBT?
    CEN-RO by IBT must be requested a minimum of 60 days prior to CEN certification expiration.

  • Can I fax my CEN-RO by IBT registration?
    Yes, the online registration form can be printed and submitted by fax with a credit card payment.

  • When will I receive my login and password?
    Your login and password information will be sent to your registered email address within 3 business days.

  • How much time do I have to complete the CEN-RO by IBT?
    The CEN is allowed 30 days to complete the exam; however BCEN advises that the exam be completed at least four weeks prior to the CENs certification expiration date.

  • What references can I use for the CEN-RO by IBT or are recommended?
    A not all-inclusive reference list is provided; however other references may be used to complete the exam. It is recommended to utilize only those resources that have a copyright date of within the last five years.

  • If I do not achieve a passing score, but my certification is still current what are my options?
    BCEN will send you a discount coupon which can be used for the CEN-RO by Exam, CEN-RO by CE, or CEN-RO by IBT provided your certification is still current.

  • If I do not achieve a passing score and my certification expires what are my options?
    Once CEN certification expires the CEN proctored exam will need to be completed to attain CEN certification status.

  • What is the cost for a re-test?
    Upon unsuccessful completion of CEN-RO by IBT you will receive a letter from BCEN with a discount coupon to be used towards reapplication.

  • What is the refund policy?
    Refunds are not available for CEN Renewal Options (CEN-RO).

  • How many times can I test?
    Unlimited testing is available if you are unsuccessful; however you must hold a current CEN status to retest.

  • Will I receive continuing education hours upon completion of the CEN-RO by IBT?
    Yes, if the IBT is successfully completed, continuing education will be rewarded.

  • How many CECH will I receive upon successful completion of the CEN-RO by IBT?
    CEN-RO by IBT has been approved, through ENA, for 30 CECH.

  • What is the BCEN confidentially agreement?
    The BCEN confidentially agreement is a signed statement agreeing to maintain the confidentiality of all test materials.

  • What if I do not agree with the BCEN confidentially agreement?
    If you do not agree to the BCEN Confidentiality Agreement, you will not be able to access the IBT and you will forfeit your renewal fee.

  • If I did not agree with the BCEN confidentially agreement initially and I now want to reenter the exam what should I do?
    You may reenter the exam and agree to the confidentiality agreement at anytime prior to the end of your 30 day window, however please remember that you must complete the exam no later then the exam completion date provided on your email signup confirmation.

  • Why is the CEN-RO by IBT revised?
    The CEN-RO by IBT examination is revised approximately every four years to ensure that the examination is representative of current nationwide practices of emergency nursing professionals.

  • How did the exam content outline change on July 15, 2007?
    The major change is in the content allocation. It is also now task oriented providing more information regarding specific emergency nursing tasks as it pertains to the CEN examination. Revised CEN Content Outline
