CALL FOR 2008 AWARD NOMINEES
Nominations Due Thursday, May 1, 2008
The Emergency Nurses Association is issuing a call for nominees for the 2008 ENA National Awards. This is the opportunity to give recognition to the innovators, leaders and those who continually go above and beyond the call of duty in the emergency nursing profession: your colleagues, mentors and friends. In addition, ENA’s Injury Prevention Institute/EN CARE is pleased to announce a call for nominees for the 2008 EN CARE Injury Prevention Awards. This is the opportunity to give recognition to those who continually contribute to the promotion of injury prevention in the community.
Only an ENA member or an EN CARE provider may submit a nomination. For tips on how to submit an Award nomination, visit the ENA Web site at www.ena.org/about/awards.
The awards will be presented during the 2008 ENA Annual Conference in Minneapolis, MN, September 24 - 27, 2008. Nominations packets must be received by May 1, 2008.
Award Categories
Judith C. Kelleher Award
Named after ENA’s co-founder, this award honors a member of the Association who has consistently demonstrated excellence in emergency nursing and has made significant contributions to the profession of nursing, the specialty of emergency nursing and the Emergency Nurses Association..
Criteria/Requirements:
- Outstanding knowledge and expertise in emergency nursing practice, education, research and professionalism; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Ongoing and significant involvement in Emergency Nurses Association activities at the state and national level;(Weight of 25 percent)
- Professional role model for emergency nurses; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Influences emergency nursing and emergency care in a professional capacity nationally (e.g., as a speaker, advocate, writer, researcher, etc.); (Weight of 25 percent)
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- Three letters of support from different states;
- ENA membership.
Gail P. Lenehan Advocacy Award
This award is given to a nurse who has had a positive impact on emergency nurses through a sustained commitment of advocacy for emergency nurses’ well-being and welfare (one example might be the health and safety of emergency nurses) or the welfare of vulnerable populations (the homeless, sexual assault victims or victims of drunk drivers, for example). This may be demonstrated by advocacy in one or more of the following areas: education, awareness campaigns, public speaking, legislative/regulation activities, policy and standards activities or other activities.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Extent and significance of the candidate’s involvement in advocacy activities that are aimed at improving the well-being and welfare of emergency nurses or vulnerable patients; (Weight of 35 percent)
- Substantial outcomes (impact, results) for emergency nurses or vulnerable populations based on the candidate’s advocacy activities; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Amount of time that the candidate has dedicated to advocacy efforts for emergency nurses or vulnerable populations outside his or her paid work responsibilities; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Enduring nature of the candidate’s advocacy activities for emergency nurses or vulnerable populations; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- Three letters of support from different states;
- ENA membership.
Lifetime Achievement Award
This periodic award is presented to an individual who reflects a career of dedicated service, accomplishments and/or contributions to emergency nursing. The special significance of the Lifetime Achievement Award is the enduring nature of the achievements and that the accomplishments and/or contributions have value to emergency nursing beyond the recipient’s lifetime.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Sustained accomplishments affecting emergency nursing at state, national and/or international level; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Service or commitments which have significantly advanced the status of emergency nursing; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Demonstrated progressive leadership (formal or informal) which has advanced the field of emergency nursing; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Provided inspiration and vision to promote the evolution and ongoing dynamic growth of emergency nursing; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Made a significant contribution toward achieving the mission of the Emergency Nurses Association; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- Three letters of support from different states;
- ENA membership.
Emergency Nurses Association Pillar of the ENA Foundation Award
The Emergency Nurses Association Foundation’s (ENAF) mission is to provide educational scholarships and research grants in the discipline of emergency nursing. Each year, the ENAF gives the Pillar Award, an award honoring individuals, corporations and ENA state councils for significant contributions toward achieving the mission of the foundation. To that end, the ENAF is accepting nominations for this year’s award until May 1, 2008.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Development of a significant project or campaign which promotes, continues, or enhances the efforts of the Foundation;
- Service as a volunteer for the Foundation reflecting a major commitment of time;
- Annual financial contributions to the Foundation at the $500 level or above consecutively for more than five years;
- Continuous financial contributions to the Foundation for a minimum of 10 most recent consecutive years;
- ENA membership is not required to receive the Pillar Award nor to submit a Pillar Award nomination.
- ENA Board members, and members of the ENAF Board of Trustees are ineligible for consideration.
Injury Prevention Institute Award
This award honors a corporation, company or government agency that has made significant contributions toward achieving the mission of the ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE by supporting ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE activities or initiatives (support could be financial, materials, program assistance, etc.).
Criteria/Requirements:
- Provide support to a corporation, agency or group of individuals as evidenced by activities that lead to decreased injuries and death; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Volunteer significant time and/or resources that assist the ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE to achieve its mission; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Collectively partner with ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE to develop new programs or assist with implementation of injury prevention programs in the community; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Significant contribution to an injury prevention program that has made an impact on the community as evidenced by increased public awareness of injury prevention; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Two letters of support;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- EN CARE provider preferred;
- ENA membership.
Public Safety Injury Prevention Award
(formerly known as Injury Prevention Law Enforcement Award)
This award is presented to a public safety provider or department for activities that promote the ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE mission of reducing injuries and deaths resulting from injury.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Partnership with local emergency care and/or EN CARE providers to inform, educate and empower community members, schools, organizations, corporations and agencies to improve the health and safety of the public; (Weight of 40 percent)
- Development and implementation of innovative injury prevention strategies or programs in the community; (Weight of 40 percent)
- Participation in advocacy efforts related to legislative or regulatory changes positively impacting injury prevention and/or public safety; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Two letters of support.
- ENA membership is not required
Barbara A. Foley Injury Prevention Leadership Award
This award honors an active ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE volunteer who, within the past year, has served as a leader in the development and promotion of injury prevention programs at the national, state or local level.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Award recipient has actively increased the number of ENA Institute for Injury prevention programs and providers within the past year at a national, state or local level; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Actively participates in advocacy efforts to enhance regulation and enforcement efforts to prevent injuries and deaths; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Promotes ENA injury prevention efforts through community programs as evidenced by local media, state newsletter or chapter activities; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Organizes and participates in numerous injury prevention programs such as bike safety, gun safety, traffic safety, child passenger safety, alcohol awareness, recreational boating safety, violence prevention and decreasing injuries in the elderly; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Fosters a working relationship with law enforcement, EMS community, local and state community safety organizations, senior citizens groups or schools; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Active ENA Institute for Injury Prevention/EN CARE provider;
- Chair or member of EIC (preferred);
- Two letters of support;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- ENA Membership.
Behind the Scenes Award (New!)
This new award recognizes an individual who has made significant contributions to ENA as exhibited through their support of an ENA member/members to promote the mission of ENA. This “Behind the Scenes” advocate is often seen but not heard and donates countless hours to assist an ENA member/members in achieving their state/local/national goals through ENA.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates support of their ENA member/members by assisting with the promotion of ENA’s mission. List specific activities the individual was involved with that had a positive effect in supporting the mission (Weight of 30 percent)
- Evidence of their donation of time as stated in their letters of support had a direct impact on meeting the mission of your local, state or national ENA organization. (Weight of 40 percent)
- Actively supports a ENA member/members by exhibiting behaviors that go the extra mile by making the job of the ENA member/members a little easier. List specific activities made easier to the ENA member or organization. (Weight of 30 percent)
- Individual has donated hours of time without expectation of compensation or reward.
- Individual does not need to be a member of ENA.
- Two letters of support with specific examples on how this individual’s behavior has gone above and beyond to support their ENA member/members. The letters should state how this individual’s support has made a positive impact in supporting the mission of your local, state, or national ENA organization.
- Refer to ENA’s current mission statement and objectives when writing your letters of support.
Frank L. Cole Nurse Practitioner Award (New!)
This new award recognizes excellence as a nurse practitioner (NP) in an emergency care setting. Recipients will be recognized by their NP peers, nursing and physician colleagues, and patients as clinical experts who deliver compassionate care in an emergency setting. Recipients will be actively involved in promoting the role and strengthening the image of nurses and NPs, especially those in emergency care settings.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates a high level of skill and knowledge as a nurse practitioner in emergency care and consistently shares this knowledge and expertise with others. (Weight of 35 percent)
- Provides and promotes exceptional patient care delivered with compassion. (Weight of 25 percent)
- Actively participates in programs, committees, and/or projects that promote the role of the NP in emergency care. (Weight of 20 percent)
- Enduring nature of the candidate’s impact on the role of the nurse practitioner in the emergency care setting. (Weight of 20 percent)
- Master’s degree or doctorate prepared nurse practitioner working in an emergency care setting, in an academic setting which prepares NPs to practice in emergency care, and/or performs research pertinent to the role and practice of NPs in the emergency care setting.

- Two letters of support.
- ENA membership.
Nursing Competence in Aging Award
The Nursing Competence in Aging Award recognizes a member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to care for older adults and the geriatric community.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates expertise in geriatric nursing in roles such as mentor, preceptor, resource, educator or advocate (Weight of 30 percent);
- Influential in the creation and/or dissemination of geriatric education to nurses and the public (Weight of 25 percent);
- Utilizes research to positively impact outcomes in the geriatric community or influence public perception of geriatric needs (Weight of 30 percent);
- Participates in advocacy efforts to enhance regulation and enforcement efforts to prevent injuries and deaths in the geriatric community (Weight of 15 percent);
- Two letters of support;
- ENA membership.
Media Award
This award recognizes a media presentation (television, radio, Internet or print) that portrays emergency nursing in a positive, accurate and professional manner. This presentation may have been created primarily to educate the consumer about emergency nursing or emergency care issues or it may have been developed for other purposes.
Criteria/Requirements:
- The presentation, program or other media content is consistent with the ENA Standards of Emergency Nursing and official ENA opinions and beliefs; (Weight of 50 percent)
- The presentation reflects the professional aspects of nursing (caring, compassion, critical thinking, etc); (Weight of 35 percent)
- The presentation provides the consumer with information/education regarding emergency care and/or issues, and reflects a high standard of professional production; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Presentation was developed without solicitation by ENA or any other organization for marketing, recruitment or membership purposes or used for such after release;
- Presentation televised, aired or published between January 1st and December 31st of the year prior to the award year;
- Two letters of support;
- ENA membership is not required to receive the Media Award.
Nursing Competence in Aging Award
The Nursing Competence in Aging Award recognizes a member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to care for older adults and the geriatric community.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates expertise in geriatric nursing in roles such as mentor, preceptor, resource, educator or advocate (Weight of 30 percent);
- Influential in the creation and/or dissemination of geriatric education to nurses and the public (Weight of 25 percent);
- Utilizes research to positively impact outcomes in the geriatric community or influence public perception of geriatric needs (Weight of 30 percent);
- Participates in advocacy efforts to enhance regulation and enforcement efforts to prevent injuries and deaths in the geriatric community (Weight of 15 percent);

Nursing Education Award
This award honors a nurse who has made significant contributions to the education of colleagues, nursing students, EMS personnel, patients, families or the community through the publication of articles, formal or informal courses, or the development of a specific emergency nursing program or curriculum.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Educational expertise in emergency nursing or EMS in roles such as mentor, preceptor, resource or instructor; (Weight of 35 percent)
- Develops educational programs/instruction for colleagues, nursing students, patients, families or the community, and/or EMS personnel; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Demonstrates emergency nursing expertise through publications and/or educational presentations of significant influence; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Actively participated in the development and/or implementation of an emergency-related program; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Two letters of support;
- ENA membership.
Nurse Manager Award
This award honors a nurse who has consistently demonstrated excellence in the profession of emergency nursing and made significant contributions to the profession of emergency nursing management.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates innovative program development (e.g., creative solutions to tough management situations); (Weight of 25 percent)
- Encouraged professional development through role modeling, mentoring and leadership (e.g., specialty certification, publications, research, etc.); (Weight of 35 percent)
- Demonstrates commitment by serving as a consultant/resource on emergency nursing issues; (Weight of 15 percent)
- Respected and regarded as an effective manager by the staff he or she supervises; (Weight of 25 percent)
- One letter from a person or persons the manager supervises;
- Two letters of support;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- ENA membership.
Nursing Practice Award
This award honors a nurse who exemplifies outstanding nursing practice as demonstrated through clinical skills, care and compassion.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates a high level of emergency nursing skills as evidenced by an extensive emergency nursing knowledge base and consistent sharing of this knowledge and expertise with others; (Weight of 35 percent)
- Provides exceptional patient care by implementing the ENA Standards of Emergency Nursing Practice (assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, evaluation and triage); (Weight of 25 percent)
- Consistently demonstrates her/his compassion for others when rendering patient care; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Actively participates in nursing programs, committees and/or projects that promote emergency nursing; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Two letters of support;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- ENA membership.
Nursing Professionalism Award
This award recognizes a nurse who consistently demonstrates high professional behavior and commitment to professional values.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Advocates for and participates in clinical improvement activities in emergency care; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Recognized by peers as an expert in emergency nursing and emergency nursing issues; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Encourages professional development for emergency nurses and serves as a positive role model for the same (e.g., CEN or TNCC attainment); (Weight of 20 percent)
- Represents emergency nursing in a positive professional manner while serving as consultant on emergency nursing and emergency care to other nursing specialties, health care disciplines, pre-hospital care providers, the media and/or members of the community; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Two letters of support;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- ENA membership.
Nursing Research Award
This award honors a nurse who has made significant contributions to the profession by conducting and/or utilizing research and disseminating research findings.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Actively participates in research activities that add to the scientific knowledge base for emergency care; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Utilizes research findings to implement evidence-based practice in emergency care; (Weight of 35 percent)
- Disseminates research findings through publications in professional journals or textbooks and/or presentations at professional conferences; (Weight of 35 percent)
- Two letters of support;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- ENA membership.
Rising Star Award
This award recognizes a new ENA member who has made significant contributions to ENA as exhibited by involvement at both the state and national levels while working to enhance ENA as the professional organization of emergency nurses..
Criteria/Requirements:
- Demonstrates a high level of enthusiasm as an ENA member by promotion of new membership, ENA programs and increasing the education level of fellow members; (Weight of 30 percent)
- In a short period of time has been able to show evidence of significant contributions to ENA at a state, local or national level; (Weight of 40 percent)
- Actively supports the mission and values of ENA and readily shares his/her knowledge and expertise with others; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Two letters of support; One letter of support must be from the state or chapter president and describe his or her active involvement at the state, local or national level;
- Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume;
- New ENA member (less than five years from date of nomination).
State Council / Chapter Government Affairs Award
This award honors an ENA state council or chapter for its outstanding efforts to increase member involvement in government affairs and advance public policy in support of nursing, health care or injury prevention issues.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Positively impacts public policy gained ENA member involvement and grassroots efforts; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Promotes issues consistent with ENA’s Public Policy Agenda; (Weight of 30 percent)
- Uses appropriate political strategies to overcome obstacles and oppositions; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Identifies emerging public policy issues and responds in a timely manner; (Weight of 20 percent)
- Curriculum vitae (CV) of chapter or state president or Government Affairs Committee chairperson should be submitted.
- Two letters of support;
- ENA membership.
Team Award
This award recognizes a group or committee (two or more persons) for significant contribution towards achieving the mission of ENA through project or development of a program.
Criteria/Requirements:
- Development and/or implementation of a sustained program or project that has a positive impact on the profession of emergency nursing or patients (Note: excludes internal process change within an organization e.g. TATs); (Weight of 50 percent)
- Contributions that have affected health care within the community, region or country; (Weight of 25 percent)
- The program or project gives rise to significant contribution toward achieving the mission of ENA; (Weight of 25 percent)
- Curriculum vitae (CV) of team leader;
- Two letters of support;
- All team members must be ENA members.
