November 1, 2002 Update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

1. Update: Guidelines for Evaluation of Persons with Possible Anthrax
This report includes interim guidelines for the clinical evaluation of persons with possible anthrax, and asks clinicians to be alert for new cases of Bacillus anthracis infection. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5043a1.htm

2. Updated recommendations for antimicrobial prophylaxis among asymptomatic pregnant women after exposure to Bacillus anthracis
Antimicrobial of choice for initial prophylaxis in pregnant women is ciprofloxacin; amoxicillin also may be considered for penicillin-susceptible strains. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5043a5.htm

3. Use of Ciprofloxacin or Doxycycline for Postexposure Prophylaxis for Inhalational Anthrax
No evidence suggests that ciprofloxacin is more or less effective than doxycycline, but broad cipro use may more likely lead to increased antimicrobial resistance among common pathogens. www.bt.cdc.gov/DocumentsApp/Anthrax/10312001/han49.asp
